The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) are dedicated to assisting students with all aspects of their academic planning while providing a foundation for appropriate academic decisions throughout their undergraduate studies. Both the department and the college are here to help students make the most out of their studies at Penn State.
Connecting with Advisers
All MatSE undergraduate students are assigned to the Academic Advisor Meg Abplanalp. MatSE students that are Schreyer scholars are also advised by the Associate Head for Undergraduate Studies Amy Robinson MatSE students also have access to general advisers from EMS at the Ryan Family Student Center (14 Deike Building, University Park campus).
The MatSE adviser is more connected to specific programs and is best prepared to help students make decisions in course selection for major requirements, approve substitutions, and make post graduation plans.
Advisers in the Ryan Family Student Center can assist in understanding university policies and procedures, general education selections and substitutions, change of major, adding minors, issues around academic difficulty, and study abroad plans.
It is the responsibility of all students to initiate contact with academic advisers, monitor their academic progress, and follow university policies. Students are encouraged to work closely with academic advisers. Students are strongly encouraged to make appointment with their adviser or with the Ryan Family Student Center through Starfish.
