A new program is launching this summer to expose Penn State science, technology, engineering and math majors to career paths in patent practice. Managed by the Law, Policy, and Engineering initiative (LPE) within the School of Engineering Design and Innovation (SEDI), the Patent Agent Career Pathway is for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students seeking to learn about patent law and explore the possibility of taking the patent bar exam, which does not require a law degree, to become a patent agent.
Onsemi (Nasdaq: ON), a leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies, and Penn State are pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) towards an $8 million strategic collaboration which includes the establishment of the onsemi Silicon Carbide Crystal Center (SiC3) at Penn State’s Materials Research Institute (MRI). onsemi will fund SiC3 with $800k per year over the next 10 years
While a lot of the focus on fighting climate change lands on things like gasoline vehicles and factory emissions, computers gobble up plenty of carbon-based energy on their own.
The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) celebrated the career of Zi-Kiu Liu, the Dorothy Pate Enright Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State, with an honorary symposium recognizing his impact on the fields of computational materials science and materials design.
Nineteen interdisciplinary research teams received funding through the Institutes of Energy and the Environment’s (IEE) Seed Grant Program for 2023. This includes more than 75 researchers who are affiliated with 10 colleges and research units across seven Penn State campuses.
Drawing inspiration from nature, Penn State scientists have developed a new device that produces images by mimicking the red, green and blue photoreceptors and the neural network found in human eyes.
In the effort to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, one strategy involves harvesting the waste heat that is already being produced by our energy systems. Thermoelectric generators can convert waste heat to clean electricity, and a new design breakthrough may make these devices more efficient than previously possible, according to scientists at Penn State and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) recognized exceptional students and faculty for their academic excellence, service and leadership during its annual Wilson Awards Celebration, held on Sunday, April 23. The Wilson Awards are named in honor of Matthew and Anne Wilson, major benefactors of the college.
The winners of the 15th annual Materials Visualization Competition (MVC), a scientific visual and artistic competition sponsored by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) and the Materials Research Institute (MRI) at Penn State, have been announced. MVC celebrates the quality of research in materials at Penn State and promotes awareness of materials science through visualization.
Alumna Titilayo “Titi” Shodiya, deputy quality manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will present the 2023 Richard E. Tressler Lecture at 3:05 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in 111 Wartik Laboratory on the Penn State University Park campus. Shodiya’s lecture is titled “Materials and Beyond.”
